Chicago Helicopter Airways Flight 698 falls into Forest Home Cemetery
1960
Forest Park, Illinois
Chicago Helicopter Airways sold scheduled seats between Midway and O'Hare, a real way to travel in 1960 when the two airports were an awkward drive apart. On 27 July a piece of one main rotor blade on the Sikorsky flying Flight 698 broke off from metal fatigue, the tail cone and tail rotor tore away, and the helicopter spun nose down into the cemetery and burned, killing the eleven passengers and both pilots. Investigators called it the first fatal crash of a commercial helicopter on a regular passenger run. Bookings dropped off after it and the airline never got them back.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
