Charis Books, the oldest feminist bookstore in the South
1974
South Candler Street, Decatur, Georgia
Linda Bryant and Barbara Borgman opened Charis in Little Five Points in 1974, and it has outlasted almost every other feminist bookstore in the country. In 2019 it moved to Decatur and became the campus bookstore of Agnes Scott College, an unusual landing place for a shop that spent decades as a movement meeting room. The stock still runs to feminist and LGBTQ writing alongside the textbooks.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
