Vaughn's Book Store, ransacked and back open within the year

Ed Vaughn and his aunt Polly Rawls bought this Dexter Avenue building in 1964 and opened Detroit's first Black owned bookstore in it early the next year, stocking Black nationalist and Pan African titles when almost nobody else would. The shop came through the start of the 1967 uprising and was then wrecked in a night raid that Vaughn and his neighbours blamed on Detroit police, though witnesses later withdrew their statements to the FBI. He restocked, and opened a second store in 1969.
