Central High, Detroit's oldest public high school and the seed of Wayne State

Detroit's first high school opened in 1858 and moved in 1863 into the building that had housed the state capitol, which is where the name Capitol High came from. It was renamed Central in 1896 and began teaching college level courses in 1913. Those classes became the Detroit Junior College in 1917, then the City College of Detroit, then Wayne University, and finally Wayne State. The school moved out to Tuxedo Street in 1925 and the building it left behind is Wayne State's Old Main.
