Victoria Hernandez, one of the first Puerto Rican women to run a business in the city, opened this branch of Casa Hernandez on Prospect Avenue in 1941. She sold it in 1969 to the composer Mike Amadeo, who has run it ever since and wrote songs recorded by Tito Rodriguez and Celia Cruz behind the counter. It went on the National Register in 2001.
