Charles Dickens came down the Ohio in 1842, looked at a swampy speculation being sold in London as a coming metropolis, and wrote it up as a breeding place of fever and death. He used it again in Martin Chuzzlewit as Eden, the paradise bought off a map that turns out to be a mudflat. It did become a real city after that, and then unbecame one. Fifteen thousand people lived here when the railroads and the river traffic did.
