The Emeryville mudflat sculptures, driftwood art built for drivers
1962
Emeryville, California

From 1962 anonymous builders started assembling figures out of driftwood and scrap on the Emeryville mudflats, placed to be seen by traffic coming off the Bay Bridge approach. Nobody signed them and nobody organised it. They had national press by 1964 and kept reappearing for three decades. The last were cleared in 1997 after the shoreline became a marine reserve.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
