The stadium opened in 1950 carrying the name of Harry Byrd, the athlete turned coach turned university president who kept Black students out of Maryland sport until 1951 and argued for segregated colleges in the state. Students and faculty pushed for the name to come off, and in December 2015 the Board of Regents voted twelve to five to drop it. It has since carried two more names, and is now SECU Stadium.
