Brooklyn Borough Hall, city hall of an independent Brooklyn

Calvin Pollard and Gamaliel King raised this Greek Revival block of Tuckahoe marble as the city hall of Brooklyn, then a separate city, finishing it in 1848. A gas jet in a third floor closet full of waste paper set it alight in February 1895, and the fire took the wooden cupola, dropping the bell, the clock and the statue of Justice through the roof. A cast iron cupola went up in 1898, the year Brooklyn was folded into New York City and the building was demoted to a borough hall. It is the oldest public building in the borough.
