Bronx Terminal Market, called Hylan's Folly

Mayor John Hylan began building a rail and barge food terminal here around 1918, meaning to break the wholesalers' hold on New York food prices by giving farmers a place to sell direct. It cost roughly 19 million dollars and for years drew four tenants and 26,000 dollars of rent a year, which is how it got the name Hylan's Folly. It found a second life as a wholesale market for Caribbean and Latin American produce before it was cleared for a shopping centre in the 2000s.
