Big Allis, the million kilowatt machine

In 1963 Allis-Chalmers announced that Con Edison had ordered the world's first million kilowatt generating unit, big enough by its own advertising to serve three million people. It was meant for Manhattan, but test borings there found the rock too poor, so it was commissioned at Ravenswood in 1965 at close to 981 megawatts. The city named it after its builder. During the Northeast blackout later that year its lubricating oil pumps went down with the grid and the turbine bearings were wrecked.
