Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues
1894
Chattanooga, Tennessee
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Born in a one-room shack here and singing on street corners as a child, she became the highest-paid Black performer of the 1920s and was billed as the Empress of the Blues. She died after a car crash in Mississippi in 1937. Her grave went unmarked until Janis Joplin paid for a stone in 1970.
