The Riverside, where Bessie Smith died

This was the G.T. Thomas Afro-American Hospital when Bessie Smith was brought here after a car crash on Highway 61, and she died of her injuries. The building became a boarding house where Ike Turner, Sonny Boy Williamson and half the musicians on the circuit stayed for a dollar or two a night, and the family that ran it kept it going for seventy years.
