W.C. Handy fell asleep waiting nine hours for a train and woke to a ragged man sliding a knife blade along guitar strings, singing about where the Southern cross the Dog. Handy called it the weirdest music he had ever heard, wrote down what he could, and spent the rest of his career publishing it. It is the first documented encounter between the blues and a man in a position to sell it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
