Berea, integrated before the state forbade it

An abolitionist minister founded a college that taught Black and white students together in a slave state, and by the 1890s about half its students were Black. Kentucky passed a law in 1904 specifically to stop it. The Supreme Court upheld the law and Berea stayed segregated until 1950. It has never charged tuition, every student works a job for the college instead.
