Vincent Bendix built his fortune on a starter drive that let a driver turn an engine over without a crank, then on four-wheel brakes, then on aviation instruments, and put the money into a trophy for the fastest flight across the country. Jacqueline Cochran won it in 1938 after they finally let women enter.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
