Until 1960 anyone on the Eastside who needed a hospital had to cross the lake to get to one. An auxiliary formed in 1953 and hundreds of Bellevue women canvassed the town house by house collecting money to build one on this side of the water. Overlake opened on 16 October 1960 and delivered its first baby the same day. It runs 349 beds now and takes more than fifty thousand emergency visits a year.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
