Bellevue College paints over a line about Miller Freeman and loses its president
Bellevue, Washington
![]()
Erin Shigaki's mural of two Japanese American children in a wartime incarceration camp went up on this campus in 2020. A vice president had a sentence removed from the artist's description, the one naming Miller Freeman's anti Japanese campaigning and the sixty Bellevue farm families it helped drive out. The college fired its president and the vice president within weeks. The mural was rededicated and made permanent. Bellevue College is the largest of the thirty four schools in the state system.
