Lake Hills, the Japanese farms between Larsen Lake and Phantom Lake

Japanese immigrants cleared and farmed the ground between Larsen Lake and Phantom Lake from the early 1900s, growing strawberries, peas and vegetables that shipped out on the Northern Pacific. Miller Freeman had founded an Anti Japanese League in Washington in 1916 and won an alien land law in 1921. The 1942 incarceration order finished the farms in a matter of weeks, and ninety percent of Bellevue's farmers were gone by the end of the war. Tract housing covered the fields and Bellevue annexed the area in 1969.
