Bayou Metairie, the old Mississippi channel that gave Metairie its high ground

About 2,600 years ago the Mississippi ran along this line, from what is now River Ridge east to Bayou St. John. When the river moved to its present bed it left a stranded bayou behind, flanked by the sediment banks it had built up. Those banks became the Metairie-Gentilly Ridge, a strip of ground a few feet higher than the swamp around it, which is why the first roads and settlements of Metairie ran along it. The bayou itself was filled in piece by piece in the late 1800s and early 1900s, though stretches of it survive.
