Mill Creek Marsh, a cedar swamp that came back after being written off

This was to be a townhouse development. Instead the Meadowlands commission took it as mitigation for filling permitted elsewhere in the district and spent 1998 and 1999 putting the tide back into roughly 140 acres, cutting channels and open water and replanting the banks. The work uncovered the stumps of a white cedar forest that once covered a third of the meadows, drowned and preserved in the mud for centuries. Egrets stand on them now.
