Banana Kelly and don't move, improve
1977
Kelly Street, Longwood, the Bronx

Tenants on the crescent shaped block of Kelly Street organised in 1977 as the Banana Kelly Community Improvement Association under the slogan don't move, improve. In 1978 they took over three abandoned buildings at 936, 940 and 944 Kelly Street and rebuilt them with sweat equity labour in exchange for co-op shares. Over the next fifteen years the association produced more than a thousand units of affordable housing in a district everyone else had written off.
