Ampere station and the neighbourhood named after a unit of electricity
1890
East Orange, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Crocker-Wheeler works built electric motors here, and in 1890 the railroad opened a stop to serve the plant. It was named for Andre-Marie Ampere, the pioneer of electrodynamics, and the district around it took the name too, which is how a corner of East Orange ended up called after a unit of electric current. A Renaissance Revival station replaced the first one in 1908. The trains no longer stop, and the name outlasted the factory.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
