Alexandria answers the sit-in by building a separate library
1940
Alexandria, Virginia
Rather than let Black residents use the library on Queen Street, the city built them one of their own on Wythe Street and opened it in 1940. It was among the earliest purpose-built segregated libraries in the country, and the city ran it that way for years. The building now holds the Alexandria Black History Museum.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
