AdvoCare pays $150 million over an illegal pyramid scheme
Plano, Texas
![]()
AdvoCare sold energy and sports supplements through a multi-level network of distributors from 1993 onward. In October 2019 the company and its former chief executive agreed to pay $150 million and accept a lifetime ban from multi-level marketing to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that the business was an illegal pyramid scheme rewarding recruitment over sales. The FTC found that in 2016 roughly seven in ten distributors earned nothing at all, and it later returned more than $149 million to them.
