Glendale's beet sugar factory, a million dollar bet on the wrong crop

William John Murphy's sugar company put up this plant between 1903 and 1906, on federal advice that Salt River Valley soil was made for sugar beets. The beets did not pay and sugar production ended within a few years. The building worked on as a beer distributor, a warehouse, a Squirt bottling plant and a soy sauce works before closing in 1986, and it has stood empty since.
