Haynes and King joined the North Texas State freshman team in 1956 and became the first Black athletes to play for a mostly white four year university in Texas. Neither was allowed to live in the dormitories, so they boarded with a Black family off campus. Haynes led the team in rushing for the next three seasons and went on to the American Football League. The stadium stood from 1952 until 2010 and also produced Joe Greene and the wrestler Steve Austin.
