A whaling captain's grain elevator at La Fox
1868
La Fox, Illinois
Lemuel Potter had commanded a whaling ship before he came inland, and in 1868 he and his brother in law Henry Barker put this elevator up beside the Galena and Chicago Union tracks to load Kane County grain for Chicago. It is a one storey building from the moment just before the trade moved to tall mechanised elevators, which is the reason almost none of its generation survive. It stands next to the La Fox station, which still takes commuters into the city.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
