A fire in the basement at Chicago Center grounds 2,000 flights
Aurora, Illinois
![]()
Chicago Center in Aurora sequences the high altitude traffic over about 91,000 square miles of the Midwest. Early on 26 September 2014 Brian Howard, a contractor working in the building, lit gasoline soaked rags in the basement beside the equipment the controllers depend on, then tried to kill himself and was stopped by the crews who arrived. Radar and communications went down, O'Hare and Midway were ground stopped, and close to 2,000 flights were cancelled. The centre was not whole again until 13 October. Howard pleaded guilty and was sentenced to twelve and a half years.
