Deobra Redden was being sentenced on an attempted battery charge on the morning of 3 January 2024 when he launched himself over the four foot bench at District Judge Mary Kay Holthus. The judge, a court marshal and a police officer were all hurt, one of them left with a gash to the head and a dislocated shoulder. The courtroom camera caught the whole thing and the clip travelled within the day. Redden, who has a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded guilty but mentally ill partway through his attempted murder trial, and was sentenced that December to between 26 and 65 years.
