New River Gorge, West Virginia
A gorge-bottom coal town Henry Ford bought in the 1920s to feed his own furnaces, his one experiment in vertical integration down to the seam. The tipple and the long conveyor climbing the mountainside survive, deep in the gorge on a Park Service road.
