Sycamore's Pumpkin Festival began in 1956 when a local resident nicknamed Mr. Pumpkin decorated his lawn with carved pumpkins, and became an official town festival in 1962. Thousands of hand-carved and painted pumpkins now cover the courthouse lawn alongside a parade, 10K run, and historic house walk. The Smithsonian has recognized it through its Museum on Main Street program.
