Edward Baker came into a fortune late in life and spent part of it putting up what he called the biggest small hotel, on the site of an old mill on the river, opening in 1928. The floor of its Rainbow Room was laid with 2,620 coloured lights under glass block, wired to shift with the music from the house pipe organ, and the lights on the dam outside were run off the same cue. The hotel generated its own power from the river.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
