The history within reach
Outdoor orchid show and sale held for nearly three decades at the tropical Fruit & Spice Park in Miami-Dade's Redland agricultural area.
Dade County bought twenty acres of Redland farmland in 1944, including a one room schoolhouse and a coral rock building from 1913, and turned it into a demonstration garden for subtropical fruit.
The land here opened for homesteading in 1898 and was named for pockets of red clay lying over oolitic limestone.
Miami's channel 6 put its transmitter out in the farm country north of Homestead rather than up the coast with the other stations.
Seven one room schools were scattered across the farms of the Redland, at Eureka, Goulds, Modello, Murray Hill, Princeton, Redland and Silver Palm.
