The Redland farms tropical fruit on red clay

The land here opened for homesteading in 1898 and was named for pockets of red clay lying over oolitic limestone. Settlers worked out how to break that rock into soil, and the district became a farm belt growing tropical fruit that will not grow anywhere else in the continental United States. It is unusual for sitting directly against one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, and it also carries a heavy concentration of ornamental nurseries.
