A Czech heritage festival in Ennis, held every Memorial Day weekend since the late 1960s, with polka bands, kolache eating, and a parade celebrating the town's Czech settler history. The Texas legislature has designated Ennis the polka capital of Texas because of it. In the early 1870s the Waxahachie Tap Road met the Houston and Texas Central here, and the junction turned a patch of prairie named for landowner William Garrett into the shipping point for a county full of cotton.
Funny car driver Billy Meyer quit racing and built his own quarter mile track in the fields outside Ennis in 1986, paving the whole surface in concrete instead of asphalt.

The clay under northeast Ellis County fired into good hard brick, and once the Houston and Texas Central reached Palmer in 1874 there was a way to ship it.
