Refugees who came after 1975 and the boat people of the following decade built one of the largest Vietnamese communities in the United States along this part of Bellaire, west of Chinatown.
Trong Nguyen opened on Bellaire in 2008 and boiled Louisiana crawfish the way Vietnamese cooks in Houston had started doing it, then tossed them in garlic butter loaded with spice instead of leaving them plain.
Chinese families who had been downtown near the convention centre began buying strip centres out along Bellaire Boulevard, and by the 1980s this stretch was the working Chinatown, Cantonese speaking and built around shopping plazas rather than a walkable main street.
Surveyors laid out a farm settlement here in 1894 and called it Dairy.
