Alief is named after its first postmaster, Alief Magee
1895
Houston, Texas
Surveyors laid out a farm settlement here in 1894 and called it Dairy. Alief Ozelda Magee arrived from Ellis County the next year with her husband, applied for a post office and ran it out of her house, and the Postal Service named the place after her. Floods nearly finished the village off before it reached a hundred people. Growth in the 1970s and 1980s turned it into one of the most linguistically diverse parts of Texas, with roughly sixty languages spoken across its schools.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
