A free street festival on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx's Little Italy, started by neighborhood merchants over 25 years ago to mark the Italian mid-August holiday.
The first Mass was said in a storefront on East 187th Street in June 1906, for Italian families who had come up from Lower Manhattan, many of them to work on the zoo and the botanical garden going up nearby.
Italian labourers building the zoo and the garden settled beside them, and the market Fiorello La Guardia forced the pushcart vendors into in 1940 is still trading.
In September 1906 the zoo put a Mbuti man from the Congo, brought to the United States by the explorer Samuel Verner, in the monkey house alongside an orangutan.
