Andover's Thanksgiving morning race pairs a five mile run and a 5K through downtown and the Merrimack Valley, drawing more than ten thousand runners before the holiday meal. Started in 1987, it has grown into one of the largest Thanksgiving Day races in New England, with finishers taking home a Table Talk apple pie. Proceeds support local youth and athletic groups.
The history within reach
Congregationalists opened the seminary on Phillips Academy's hill in 1807, partly as an orthodox answer to Harvard drifting Unitarian.
The financier and Phillips alumnus Thomas Cochran gave the school a museum of American art in 1930, in a building by Charles Platt.
Locals still call this stretch of the Shawsheen River simply the Village.
Samuel Phillips founded the school in 1778, and its charter makes it the oldest incorporated academy in the United States.
