The Addison Gallery, an American art museum inside a boarding school
1930
Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts
The financier and Phillips alumnus Thomas Cochran gave the school a museum of American art in 1930, in a building by Charles Platt. The collection covers Copley, Winslow Homer, Eakins, Hopper and Frank Stella, which is an unusual holding for a high school to own outright. It operates as a department of the academy and admission is free.
