An uncurated fringe theater festival across downtown Elgin's small venues, with dance, theater, comedy and music within walking distance of the town square. Founded in 2013 on the international fringe circuit model, the 2026 edition runs most of September with a concentrated performance weekend of more than 80 shows.

• The Elgin church built to look like a pocket watch0.1 mi

  George Hunter designed this Richardsonian Romanesque church in 1892 so that its round front and heavy stone casing would read as a pocket watch, in the town the Elgin National Watch Company had made the centre of American watchmaking.

• Elgin's fifteen storey tower, finished months before the crash0.3 mi

  A 186 foot office tower built in 1929 for the Home National Bank, and still the tallest thing in Elgin.

  The National Watch Company came to Elgin in 1864 and grew into the largest watch factory in the world, turning out tens of millions of movements before the plant closed in 1965 and was pulled down the year after.

• The Elgin asylum, which held 7,700 patients at its peak1.4 mi

  It opened in 1872 as the Northern Illinois Hospital and Asylum for the Insane and grew to more than 1,100 acres, a good part of it a farm worked by the patients themselves.
