People burned out of San Francisco in 1906 crossed the bay and settled along San Pablo Avenue in a camp that took the name Rust, after the man who ran its post office.
This scrap of Richmond shoreline has been part of a Spanish and then Mexican rancho, a commercial ferry stop, the ground for two illegal bare knuckle prizefights, a dynamite store, a shooting range and an illegal dump for car batteries.
The powder companies working at the foot of this hill planted hundreds of blue gum eucalyptus over its slopes and summit, so the trees would take the sound and the debris when the dynamite works went off.
The Giant Powder Company, the first firm in the United States to make dynamite, worked this rocky promontory after explosions wrecked two earlier plants.
