Albany Hill wears a eucalyptus forest planted to absorb explosions

The powder companies working at the foot of this hill planted hundreds of blue gum eucalyptus over its slopes and summit, so the trees would take the sound and the debris when the dynamite works went off. The works are long gone and the forest is still there, now struggling in a drier climate than the one it was planted into. A Spanish expedition called the hill El Cerrito in 1772, which is where the neighbouring city got its name.
