The history within reach
Frederic Tudor worked out how to saw lake ice into blocks, pack it in sawdust and sell it in places that had never seen any, and Fresh Pond was one of the ponds his crews harvested.
From the 1880s the observatory photographed the sky onto glass and hired women at low wages to measure the plates.

The Georgian house went up around 1767 for Thomas Oliver, the royal lieutenant governor, who lost it when the Revolution arrived.
Radcliffe opened in 1879 as the way women could be taught by Harvard's faculty without being admitted to Harvard, and became one of the Seven Sisters.
