Fresh Pond, where Boston's ice trade cut its blocks
1826

Frederic Tudor worked out how to saw lake ice into blocks, pack it in sawdust and sell it in places that had never seen any, and Fresh Pond was one of the ponds his crews harvested. Cambridge ice went to New Orleans, the Caribbean and as far as Calcutta, from a kettle hole a few miles from the wharves. The pond is now Cambridge's drinking water reservoir, ringed by a park and closed to swimmers.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
