Bristol, Rhode Island has held a Fourth of July celebration every year since 1785, making it the nation's oldest continuous Independence Day observance. The day opens with patriotic exercises downtown and builds to a military, civic and firefighters' parade down Hope Street. The whole town turns out, and the center line of the parade route stays painted red, white and blue year round.
