The Gaspee affair
June 9, 1772
Warwick, Rhode Island
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A customs schooner chasing smugglers ran aground on a sandbar, and Providence merchants rowed down in the dark, shot the captain and burned her to the waterline. It was the first armed attack on the Crown in the colonies, eighteen months before the Tea Party, and nobody would identify a single participant.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
