The Narragansett Rune Stone

A three-ton boulder carved with two rows of rune-like characters, noticed in the tidal flats of Narragansett Bay in the 1980s: Viking evidence to believers, a nineteenth-century hobbyist's afternoon to everyone else. In 2012 someone stole it, a full boulder, from the shallows. The state recovered it and planted it in a village park with a marker that carefully promises nothing. The argument is the attraction.
