Two women pitched tents at the forks of Troublesome Creek and started the first rural settlement school in America, teaching and boarding children in a county with almost no schooling.
A federal job-training scheme put cameras in the hands of young people in a coalfield town so they could learn a trade, and instead of leaving they turned it into a film and radio outfit that has documented the region from inside for over fifty years.
A free folklife festival produced by Appalshop in downtown Whitesburg, with old-time and bluegrass music, local crafters and food, and a Sunday gospel show at a nearby church.
Coal operators here ran the county outright, hiring deputies, evicting strikers and shooting organisers, and it took until the 1970s to finish the fight.
